Tesla Speeding Alert: Know When a Monitored Drive Goes Too Fast

A Tesla speeding alert tells you when your car is driven too fast without your owner phone detected. How a Tesla speeding alert works

Sentry Driver is an owner-only app. You install it; the people who borrow or share your Tesla install nothing and do nothing. Here’s the flow:

  • Official connection - It links to your Tesla over Tesla’s official Fleet API using OAuth. Your Tesla login is never stored.
  • Automatic owner-detection - Bluetooth senses whether your owner phone is near the car. When your phone is present, owner-absence alerts stay quiet. When it is not present, monitoring switches on by itself — no key handoff, no toggling.
  • Near real-time speed - During a monitored drive, Sentry Driver reads your Tesla’s speed from the Fleet API. Cross your threshold and the alert reaches your phone as telemetry and push delivery allow.

Because the detection is automatic, you don’t have to remember to “arm” anything before you hand over the keys. If your owner phone is not detected, it’s watching.

What triggers a speeding alert

You decide what “too fast” means. Set a speed threshold that fits the driver and the roads they’re on, and Sentry Driver alerts you only when that line is crossed — not for every drive.

Tesla’s built-in speed limit vs. a real-time alert

Tesla does offer a native tool here, and it’s worth understanding the difference. Tesla’s Parental Controls can enforce a speed cap — “Limit Speed,” set from 50 mph up where supported. But it’s a PIN-protected restricted mode that applies to the whole vehicle, not to Sentry Driver’s owner-phone detection, so you have to switch it on and off by hand every time the driver changes. Outside that restricted mode, Tesla’s native tools are not built around owner-absence speeding push alerts.
