Why you don’t need a restricted Tesla profile
Tesla does have a native option here — Parental Controls — but it solves a different problem. On supported software, it’s built to restrict the car: cap the top speed, use gentler acceleration, lock safety features on, and send a late-night curfew notice in Tesla’s current fixed window. To use it you turn on a PIN-protected restricted mode at the vehicle, and because it’s a global, vehicle-wide setting, you have to manually toggle it on when a borrower takes the car and off again when you want your car back to normal. It also isn’t tied to Sentry Driver’s owner-phone detection, so there’s no “set it once and only alert when I’m away.”
In practice, most people aren’t going to put a borrowing adult — a spouse, a sibling, a friend — into a PIN-locked restricted mode. And Tesla’s native tools are not built around owner-absence speeding or hard-braking push alerts for normal unrestricted driving.
