Lend the Car Without Lending Away Your Visibility

When you want to monitor someone borrowing my Tesla - a sibling in town for the weekend, a friend running an errand, your partner taking it for the day - the worry isn’t whether they’ll bring it back. It’s how they drove it while it was out of your sight.

Sentry Driver gives you that answer automatically. There’s no restricted profile to switch on, no key card to hand over, and nothing for the borrower to install. You lend the car the way you always do. Monitoring starts when your owner phone is not detected.

Bluetooth Knows When It Isn’t You

This is the part that makes lending effortless. Sentry Driver uses your phone’s Bluetooth to detect when your owner phone is near your Tesla. When your phone is present, alerts stay off. When you walk away and someone else takes the wheel, monitoring activates on its own.

  • You’re driving: your phone is detected, no alerts fire
  • You hand over the keys: your phone is gone, the next driver is monitored automatically
  • They bring it back: you have the monitored trip waiting for you

You never have to remember to “turn it on” before lending it, and the person borrowing it has no app or driver-side device to manage.

What You See for Every Borrowed Trip

Sentry Driver connects through Tesla’s official Fleet API, so the data comes from Tesla telemetry:

  • Speeding alerts when the car passes the threshold you set, with speed and location
  • Hard-braking and acceleration counts, so you can spot an aggressive drive
  • Accident detection with a timely alert and location if Sentry Driver detects a possible impact
  • Geofence zones if you want to know when the car leaves a certain area
  • A trip record: distance, duration, max speed, and an event log

For the full how-it-works walkthrough, see our guide on monitoring a borrowed Tesla. If this is happening inside one household rather than an occasional loan, the shared vehicle setup covers that case.

Lend With Confidence, Not Anxiety

The goal isn’t to catch anyone out - it’s to remove the guesswork. We recommend telling people the car is monitored. Most drivers are more careful when they know, which is exactly the outcome you want.

Sentry Driver is owner-only and runs on OAuth, so Tesla credentials are never stored and the borrower’s privacy isn’t touched. You see how your own car was driven. That’s it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the person borrowing my Tesla need to install an app?

No. Only you need Sentry Driver. Whoever borrows the car installs nothing, pairs nothing, and changes nothing about how they drive. Monitoring runs through Tesla’s Fleet API on your account.

How does it know the difference between me and the borrower?

Sentry Driver detects your phone over Bluetooth when you’re near the car. If your phone is present, the drive is treated as owner-present and alerts stay off. When you hand the car over and walk away, the next drive is monitored automatically.

Can I lend the car to more than one person?

Yes. Any monitored drive where your owner phone is not detected works the same way. You can also register more than one phone as an “owner” so that monitoring only activates when none of your designated phones are present.

What if I only care about accidents?

Configure just accident detection and leave the other alerts off. You’ll only hear from the app if something serious happens while the car is out.

Will they know I’m monitoring the car?

Only if you tell them - and we suggest you do. There’s nothing on the car or the dash that announces it, but transparency tends to produce the safer driving you’re after.
