Why isn't the app detecting when I'm driving?
For Bluetooth-based driver detection to work reliably, your phone must be paired as a key to your Tesla.
The app detects your presence by looking for your phone’s Bluetooth connection to your Tesla. This only works if:
- Your phone is set up as a Tesla key - Use the Tesla app to add your phone as a key (Settings > Locks > Phone Key)
- Bluetooth is enabled on your phone at all times
- You’re within range - Your phone needs to be within about 2 meters of the vehicle
Why this matters:
When your phone is paired as a Tesla key, it maintains a constant Bluetooth connection with your vehicle. Sentry Driver uses this existing connection to determine if you’re the one driving. If your phone isn’t set up as a key, there’s no Bluetooth connection for the app to detect.
Common issues:
- Phone not added as Tesla key in the Tesla app
- Bluetooth turned off on your phone
- Phone too far from vehicle (e.g., in a bag in the trunk)
- Bluetooth permissions not granted to Sentry Driver
Android users: Make sure to disable battery optimization for Sentry Driver, or background Bluetooth checks won’t work.
