How accurate is driver detection?

Driver detection is highly accurate when your phone is set up as a Tesla key, but there are some edge cases to be aware of.

The system uses Bluetooth to detect whether your phone is present in the vehicle. When your phone is detected, the app knows you’re likely the driver and can suppress notifications meant for when someone else is driving.

Factors that affect accuracy:

High accuracy situations:

  • Phone is set up as a Tesla key in the Tesla app
  • Phone is in your pocket, purse, or cup holder
  • Bluetooth is enabled and permissions granted
  • Battery optimization disabled (Android)

Potential false positives (alerts when you’re driving):

  • Phone left at home while you drive
  • Phone in airplane mode or Bluetooth off
  • Phone battery dead
  • Phone stored in RF-blocking case/bag

Potential false negatives (no alerts when someone else drives):

  • You’re a passenger in the car with your phone
  • Your phone is accidentally left in the car

Tips for best accuracy:

  1. Always carry your phone when driving your Tesla
  2. Keep Bluetooth enabled
  3. Ensure the Sentry Driver app has Bluetooth permissions
  4. On Android, disable battery optimization for the app

Range limit: Your phone must be within approximately 2 meters (6 feet) of the vehicle to be detected. This prevents detection when you’re simply near the car but not inside.
